sia Group acquires non-woven abrasives division of Freudenberg Group (04/07/2001)
The announced takeover by the sia Group of non-woven abrasives manufacturing operations from the Freudenberg Group has now been successfully completed. The purchase contract was signed at the end of June and the new business unit, sia Fibral Limited in Halifax (UK), will be consolidated into the sia Group with effect from 30 July 2001. For more than 30 years, sia Abrasives has been operating successfully on the UK market with its own Group company, which converts and markets coated abrasives. With this new production facility and its comprehensive range of non-woven abrasives, the sia Group, which is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and converters of coated abrasives, will be further reinforcing its position on the market. The business unit that is being thus acquired recorded sales of non-woven abrasives in the year 2000 totalling CHF 28 million (45% of this in the USA) and currently employs a workforce of 116. The unit’s experienced management will remain in place after the takeover to ensure successful continuity.
The new product palette ideally rounds off the sia range of abrasives and abrasive systems for professional surface treatment and finishing, particularly in the growth area of metalworking applications. In addition, the sia Group will be ideally placed to further expand its activities in overseas markets. By exploiting the profitable market potential, the sia Group expects to strengthen of its operating profit margin.
