Number 4 worldwide in the field of coated abrasives, sia Abrasives is registering positive developments with its new products for metalworking applications. sia Abrasives focuses its range of products and services consistently on the use of coated abrasives for surface finishing and is confident that these will gradually be replacing traditional bonded abrasives. The success enjoyed by two new products confirms the strategy pursued by the company, which makes substantial investments in the development of new products and in the manufacture of coated abrasives.
"siaflap” is an abrasive flap-wheel that is used primarily for grinding off welding seams in steel and stainless steel. It demonstrates significant advantages over the traditional bonded rough-grinding disk, since "siaflap” produces an even grinding pattern - without grooves or scratching - thanks to a better distribution of pressure. This rapidly growing market represents a new field for sia Abrasives within its core business. Production of these new flap-wheels was commenced in Frauenfeld on 1 June 2000. Since it started manufacturing in-house, sia Abrasives has sold three-and-a-half times as many as it did for the entire year in 1999 (bought from third-party manufacturers), which is evidence of the extremely positive response from customers.
The second product is "siabite”, which was launched worldwide in 1999. This is permeated with ceramic grit and designed specially for heavy-duty grinding in a variety of metalworking applications. Sales registered for the first nine months of 2000 already total fifty percent of the volume originally planned for sale by the year 2004.
